Laser-hair-removal-KentIPL Hair Removal & Laser Hair Removal Treatments

Light treatments such as laser and IPL have been used in medicine and dermatology successfully for over 30 years. They can be used to treat a variety of dermatological conditions safely and effectively with no downtime. Permanent hair reduction can be achieved using light to disrupt the hair follicles which prohibits further hair growth. This leaves the skin smooth and hair free. Permanent hair removal using light is a safe and proven way to eliminate unwanted hair virtually anywhere on the body.

Here at The Skin Clinic we firmly believe that hair removal treatments using laser and IPL should be performed by medical professionals only. We do not delegate any of the treatments to beauty therapists but employ Doctors and Nurses with an interest in dermatology to carry out these highly skilled treatments. With the recent deregulation of Lasers and IPL machines in 2010 by the Government, it is more important than ever that you find a safe and trustworthy medical skin clinic to carry out your cosmetic treatments.

We have a flawless clinical reputation for IPL and laser hair removal with no adverse incidents ever reported. We believe in delivering excellence in the field of cosmetic dermatology and will ensure that all of your treatments with us are carried out safely and effectively.

How does hair removal work?

At any one point hair can be in three different phases: anagen (growing phase), catagen (intermediate phase), telogen (resting or quiescent phase). Only hair that is in the active growth phase known as anagen will respond to the Laser or IPL. This is why treatments for hair removal have to be done in stages approximately every 4-6 weeks so that any inactive hair follicles (ie. in non-growing phases) can start to grow and will be targeted by the next or following treatment.

The number of treatments an individual needs depends on their skin colour and type, hair colour, medical history and the area being treated. Those with darker skin often need more treatments and care has to be taken not to damage the pigment or colour in the skin during treatments. For this reason we recommend that only highly skilled medical professionals perform these kinds of treatments.

Most people will need at least 6 treatments to achieve an 85-95% reduction of hair in the treatment area. Occassional maintenance treatments might be needed as we cannot prevent sporadic new hairs from forming.

Is it painful?

IPL hair removal is virtually painless. At most it will feel like an elastic band pinging against the skin. At The Skin Clinic we have invested in a new generation IPL machine that gives faster and virtually pain free hair removal. It is a state of the art machine that combines radiofrequency and light to achieve permanent hair reduction in almost any skin type.

Are there any contraindications?

We cannot use laser or IPL on suntanned skin. If you have an active suntan you will be advised to wait 4 weeks until commencing your treatment. We do not advise light or laser treatment during pregnancy nor for anyone with vitiligo, a depigmenting skin condition. If you would like further advise please ask your clinician.

What can I expect afterwards?

After your treatments we ask that you avoid the sun. After your first treatment the hair will grow back and then may fall out after 7-14 days. Over the course of your treatments you will notice that less hair grows back and that the hair distribution starts to become patchy. By the end of your treatment you should be hair free. Some people will need maintenance treatments to remove new sporadic hair growth in the area in the future. Your clinician can advise you further.
